Oxhide (Niu Pi) (Institutional Use)

"The most important Chinese film of the past several years--and one of the most astonishing recent films from any country" - Shelly Kraicer, Cinema-scope"The most celebrated Chinese debut since Jia Zhang-ke's Xiao Wu" - Mubarak Ali, The Lumiere ReaderDaily life in an impossibly cramped Beijing apartment takes on epic proportions in this, intimate portrait, with unprecedented access, of a working-class Chinese family.Boldly transforming documentary into fiction, Liu Jiayin cast her parents and herself as fictionalized versions of themselves. Her father, Liu Zaiping, sells leather bags but is slowly going bankrupt. He argues with his wife, Jia Huifen, and his daughter over methods to boost business in the shop. A cloud of anxiety follows them into sleepless nights shared in the same bed. But through the thousand daily travails of city life, a genuine and deeply moving picture of Chinese familial solidarity emerges from the screen. With virtually no budget and boundless ingenuity, Liu Jiayin's eye-opening debut, shot when she was 23 years old, consists of twenty-three static, one-scene shots within her family's fifty square meter home. Liu keeps her small DV camera in claustrophobic closeness to her subjects, often showing only parts of their bodies as their voices dominate the soundtrack. OXHIDE takes the microscopic physical and emotional details of a family and magnifies them on a widescreen canvas. "Liu takes the film language of "realism" into…

Straight Right (Institutional Use)

This movie floored me. It's not often that a movie affects me like this one did. As a matter of fact, the last movie that had this kind of affect on me, even though it is very different, was The Crow.At the end of that one, I just layed my head down on my girlfriend's lap and cried - and couldn't stop. I think maybe it was because of what happened to Brandon Lee, but it was actually kind of embarassing, I just couldn't stop. With this movie, it was just the absolute pain that the protagonist was in, all from not being able to get over the traumatization of what happened to him when he was a child. He starts trying to keep the same thing that happened to him from happening to other kids, but with disastrous results.I was just rapt the entire movie, watching it unfold, wondering where it would go. And where it did end up going was tragic, but it was also compelling and beautiful. And while I didn't lay in my (now wife's) lap and cry the way I did with The Crow, I did just sit on my couch with goose bumps all over me until well after the credits were done. It's been several days now since I saw it and, literally, every day since I saw it, I have stopped at some point in the day and gone back over certain scenes and moments from "Straight Right". Congratulations to everyone involved w/ that movie. You should hold your heads high.

THE GREAT SADNESS OF ZOHARA (Institutional Use)

This film is truly evidence of the craft of film making being practiced to its fullest. Shot with a two person crew, one camera and less than a $6,000 budget, this is truly testimony that quality film making and thoughtful artistic practice can take the place of a flashy special effects budget that could cure an epidemic. "Zohara" is poetic, thoughtful, and aesthetically flooring. I highly recommend this film for anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary in a wonderful way.

Ontic Antics Starring Laurel and Hardy; Bye Molly (Institutional Use)

Do not even bother. Just wasted $600.00 watching this piece of cinema most foul. It made no sense. Maybe the $250.00 to rent it would have been more like it. I do not think I got my extra $350.00 worth. The Doctor thinks he can get my money back on a medical excuse. My mother got so upset, that she started putting onions in our mail-box again. She hasn't done this since she heard Mamie Eisenhower died. Laurel and Hardy were always my family's favorite. This film makes them appear to be bad guys. I doubt very much that Stan had knowledge of Kennedy's assassination and Ollie conspiring with The Duke of Windsor to cover up Sir Harry Woods murder in The Bahamas is a bit of a stretch. Laurel & hardy were a very funny comedy team who brought much laughter and potatoes to this world and we are the better for it.

The Eagle's Children (Universities)

For anyone interested in the fundamentals of Danza Azteca, Eagle's Children portrays the elemental facets of this age-old tradition. La Danza is a fusion of ancient indigenous Mexican culture and the Catholic church which functions as a catalyst for the survival of the tradition. This idea is well manifested in the images and dialogue captured in The Eagles Children.

Studio Lighting Essentials for Portrait Photography

I downloaded this video through Amazon instead of purchasing the DVD and even though it doesn't come with the bonus features that are on the DVD I still love it. Mark's teaching style is easy to follow and he gives a lot of great information in this video. If you are already a fan on Mark's video's on Adorama TV this one is for you, this video goes much more indepth then anything you would see from his Digital Photography 1 on 1 series. My favorite part about this video was how Mark shows the viewer the limitless possibilities of setting up and positioning lights weather you are using just one or a half dozen lights.

Bloody Ivory (Institutional Use - Library/High School/Non-Profit)

I watched the DVD last night and was left with mixed emotions. Amazement and gratitude with the work David and Daphne Sheldrick did for all the Tsavo wildlife. If only there were still men of his caliber today! I think of the patience Simon Trevor must have had to spend so much time and effort filming, documenting what was happening and making the wonderful films to bring attention to the plight of African wildlife. Then I couldn't help but think, here we are, 40 - 50 years down the road, poaching is worse now than it was then, now the poachers are using AK-47's, - yet the crime of poaching is still fought in the same way it was back then with fewer poachers being caught, and those who are caught get away with a slap on the wrist. That is truly disheartening. If only films like "Wanted - Dead or Alive" and "Bloody Ivory" could be mandatory viewing for every school child in the world, including the Asian countries, then perhaps the adults of the future might be more caring and protective of wildlife.Again, thank you AEFF for the wonderful work you do!

In the Name of the Son (Institutional Use)

this is a perfect short. Like a short story, it tells just enough to engross and is handled so expertly that it not only engrosses but ultimately is very moving. The last conversation is a revelation, made me laugh and then moved me to tears. Bravo, well done.

Ayn Rand's We the Living (Institutional Use)

Ironically produced under fascist Italy as an anti-communist film (though later banned), We The Living's far broader pro-individual and anti-statist theme shines through in this excellent film. This is epic movie making based on one of the lesser known and most autobiographical of Ayn Rand's books. We The Living depicts communist Russia as Ayn Rand remembers it but is also a good story about a love triangle between young Kira, who wants to be an engineer, teetering Leo, who once was an idealist but quickly decays into cynicism held only by his love and admiration for Kira, and secret police GPU officer Andrei, who loves Kira but believes the wrong ideals and has to learn this the hard way.The DVD includes a fascinating documentary on the making of the film as well as many minutes of deleted scenes.Highly recommended!
